A new year brings the promise of new beginnings. Perhaps a new start or a time to redefine ourselves. This may be a great opportunity to develop what your vision is for the future.
You may want to reflect on what went well, and what didn’t go well.
Rather than dwell on the mis-steps and missed opportunities of the past, here are a few things you can do to set up your business for success.
Before committing to making a change or implementing a strategy for your goals, take a step back and think about why do you want to make a change?
For instance, you may make a new year resolution to exercise more to lose 10 kgs. But losing the 10 kgs is the outcome but getting there may mean that you are living a healthier, longer or happier life. It may give you more confidence or allow you to do things you previously couldn’t.
Apply this logic to your business goals. Boosting your settlement volume or increasing your network of referral partners may be your goal. Increasing revenue or expanding your network may increase opportunities for you and allows you to engage with more customers – the reason behind your goal in the first place.
If you remind yourself of the “why” of your goal, you are more likely to achieve your goal.
Having a clear reason (your “why”) will motivate your to set up daily activities and actions to achieve your goals.
Write down your goals and display them in a place where you can see them. This will act as a visual prompt to remind you and inspire you during the day-to-day grind.
Make sure that your everyday activities are helping your achieve your goals.
January is a great time to reconnect with people. Are there friends, clients, or acquaintances in your contacts list whom you have not spoken to lately?
Wish them a “Happy New Year’. Use this season to catch-up, reconnect, and nurture the relationships that matter.
When you think about your business, do you see yourself doing the same thing in 2021?
If you don’t do anything different why would the results change? You may want to have a Planning Meeting – you could do this with your Mentor or your partner.
Start with the things that went well in 2019. Review the issues that didn’t go well. This exercise will help you understand the issues and help you clarify what you need to explore to change.
Having the discussion with someone else will also make you accountable to your goals.
There is a sign on my desk that says: “Great things don’t come out of comfort zones”.
Push yourself and get yourself outside the comfort zone by learning a new skill. What new skills will you need to help you achieve your goals?
Perhaps a writing course to help you write better articles for your blog? Or a public speaking course to help you present at seminars?
Discuss this with your mentor or your partner. They may even join you.
The new year is not all about new beginnings. It is also a great time to review your accomplishments in 2019.
What did you learn? What did you achieve?
A lot can happen in one year, but life gets in the way that we sometimes don’t take the time to reflect on what we learnt.
Take note of your discoveries and think about the ways you can apply these lessons as you progress into 2020.
